Let’s talk About the Early Years

Alberta Health and Wellness, Office of the Chief Medical Officer of Health is asking:  Are we doing the best we can to ensure positive futures for children?  Our growing understanding of the early years in a child’s life provides us with an opportunity to re-think what we do to support healthy childhood development.

ENCYCLOPEDIA ON EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT

Available in French, English, Spanish and Portugese, this free online encyclopedia covers 47 topics related to the psychosocial development of the child, from conception to the age of five, and presents the most up-to-date scientific knowledge.

No conference this year

Each year, the conference was a wonderful opportunity for caregivers to fully immerse themselves in caring for newcomer children through networking and professional development. Unfortunately, this year the LINC Childminding Conference is not being offered. With the TESL Conference coming up, some of you may still have a need for CNC Staff professional development ideas and support. For resources that can help you set up a training for your CNC Staff, visit the Learning Centre on the CMAS website for online workshops, training videos and links. Watch for additional ideas and supports to help you plan for PD early in October.

Growing Up in a New Land – A Guide for Newcomer Parents

The Best Start Resource Centre has announced the publication of a new booklet for parents of children 0-6 titled Growing Up in a New Land - A Guide for Newcomer Parents. This booklet contains information on: support for parents, parenting in Canada, keeping your child healthy and safe, taking care of yourself as parents and additional services for newcomer parents. Paper copies of the booklet can also be ordered at $1.25 each.

Frontiers of Innovation

Launched in May 2011, Frontiers of Innovation (FOI) focuses on the work of a community of more than 400 researchers, practitioners, policymakers, philanthropists, and experts in systems change from across North America. The goal of FOI is to bring about substantially greater positive impacts for vulnerable young children whose needs (or the needs of their caregivers) by forging cross-sector collaborations that prompt creativity, support experimentation, and learn from experience. Refugee children experiences

In this short video, refugee children from Syria talk about their experiences leaving their homeland and life in a refugee camp. They explain their current difficulties in adjusting to life as displaced people and express their hopes for the future, with one pondering on the meaning of the word 'refugee' itself.
