That’s the top message from a new report that focuses on ways that parents, family members and other adults can help multilingual preschool-age children cope with the stress and trauma of the continuing COVID-19 pandemic. Nurturing Your Preschool-Age Multilingual Child Amid COVID-19: The Important Role of Languages describes the language development of multilingual children and how to nurture them through daily conversations and other interactions.

Multilingual mental health resources for newcomers

As part of the Promising Practices in Accessing Virtual Mental Health: Supporting Refugees during COVID-19 project, funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and the Ontario Ministry of Health, service providers working with newcomers and refugees share these multilingual mental health resources.

CMAS Webinar: Happiness @ Work

Did you know that 50% of our happiness is determined by our genes, 10% by our environment but that 40% is determined by our actions or attitude? The science of positive psychology or human flourishing suggests hundreds of simple interventions (e.g. like random acts of kindness; expressing gratitude) that we can apply daily to increase our happiness and well-being.

Researchers have been studying happiness in the workplace for more than 20 years and have learned that employees who have found a way to have meaning and purpose, use their strengths, are highly engaged and have good relationships with their colleagues are happiest.

In this CNC webinar, positive psychology practitioner, Patrice Palmer joins us to talk about different kinds of happiness, and concrete examples of simple things we can do each day to positively impact everyone around us!

Presenter: Patrice PalmerPatrice Palmer, M.Ed., M.A. has more than 20 years of experience as an ESL teacher and trainer in Canada and spent 7 amazing years in Hong Kong.  She has certificates in Positive Psychology and Positive Education from Wilfrid Laurier University, and now teaches in those programs.  Patrice is a Certified Mindfulness Facilitator and Registered Yoga Teacher.  She is the author of The Teacher Self-Care Manual and is a fierce advocate for student, teacher and all school staff well-being.

Children’s Book: Building a Home – Available Online in 7 Languages!

The New Canadians Centre in Peterborough has published this new children’s picture book that shares the experiences of immigrant children when they arrive in Canada. Building a Home is available online in 7 languages. Written and illustrated by Peterborough artist Casandra Lee (herself a recent immigrant), Building A Home was inspired by the stories of six local newcomer children.

Cultural Awareness and Sensitivity in Teaching ‘People Safety’ Skills

Kidpower has developed a list of lessons learned about creating cultural awareness to address potential obstacles in teaching people how to advocate for and protect the emotional and physical well-being of themselves and others - especially children.
