Canada 150: What is Happening Around Canada

The Canadian Race Relations Foundation (CRRF) is celebrating Canada’s 150 with its 150 Stories project, publishing one story per week for 150 weeks. 150 Stories pays tribute to Canada‘s diversity, democratic principles and multiculturalism by telling the stories of remarkable Canadian individuals, organizations, initiatives and historic events. People can submit their stories-and read those selected for publication–by visiting the CRRF website.

Not all Canada 150 activities require leaving your TV and computer. To celebrate Canada’s 150th, the History channel has unveiled a series of digital short videos titled Thank You, Canada, reflecting our historical successes, milestones and inventions–from the snowmobile to maple syrup. They’ll be rolling out from now until July 1. The CBC website also has a fun and educational resource on what life was like for Canadian kids 150 years ago.

To celebrate the 150th Anniversary of Canada, The Canada 150 for 150 Volunteer Challenge invites people across the country to give as much as 150 hours of volunteer time in 2017 in celebration of Canada’s 150th anniversary. Thanks to a Tree Canada grant, Tree to our Nature, Canada 150 Legacy Program is offering community groups, families and individuals the opportunity to volunteer to plant trees! Look up local community events to find a tree planting event near you!

Shaw Canada’s Canada 150 initiative will grant 150 birthday wishes that celebrate the people and organizations making Canada a better place for kids. One of these initiatives is the Shaw Newcomer Pass Program. Shaw has partnered with Kids Up Front Canada to bring 20,000 new Canadians to world class events over the next two years. Kids Up Front works with a variety of registered community service agencies to distribute the tickets fairly and efficiently to tens of thousands of children each year. This program will provide unique opportunities for newcomer families by connecting them to arts, culture and sports. Contact a Kids up Front office to find out which community service agency partners are in your area and how families can take advantage of this program.
